Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad:
Great Neck Station Project

The Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad and its supporting Foundation have developed a plan to construct a 15,000 square foot station on Bayne Drive off Old Donation Parkway near Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.  The facility is being built adjacent to the current Station 8, which today doubles as a firehouse and satellite rescue facility. The new Great Neck Station will:
- Permit faster response to emergencies in the growing Great Neck corridor. In 2007, the VBVRS answered over 10,000 calls, with some 40% coming from the neighborhoods served by Station 8.

- Provide expanded living space for rescue crews who typically work 12-hour shifts.

- Create a community hall for organizations’ use as well as space for a police sub-station and volunteer EMS supervisor.

- Blend in well with the existing library and firehouse on Bayne Drive.

- Serve as a strategic base from which emergency services can be directed in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster.

Given the increasing amount of traffic in the area and the necessity to be on the scene of an accident or at the home of a heart attack or stroke victim as quickly as possible to save lives, the value of an enhanced Rescue Squad building in this location is critical. In consideration of its location, any vehicular traffic as well as outside lighting and noise will be directed north to open space and away from existing homes.

The construction began in October 2007 and will be completed in late Fall 2008.   For more information, contact the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad Foundation at 757-437-0968 or e-mail to development@rescue14.com.
